Do the math first: they have identical latency
True first-word latency is 2000 × CL ÷ transfer rate. DDR5-6000 CL30: 2000 × 30 ÷ 6000 = 10.0ns. DDR5-6400 CL32: 2000 × 32 ÷ 6400 = 10.0ns. Dead heat. What 6400 CL32 actually offers is 6.7% more raw bandwidth at the same latency — a real but small edge that shows up in bandwidth-hungry workloads and mostly disappears in games.
That is why arguing about these two kits in the abstract is a waste of time. Same latency, slightly different bandwidth: the tiebreakers are your platform and this week's prices.
Platform reality: AMD says 6000, Intel says 6400
On AM5, the memory controller runs 1:1 with the memory clock up to roughly DDR5-6000; at 6400, many CPUs fall to a 2:1 divider that adds latency and can erase the bandwidth gain outright. Some samples run 6400 at 1:1 — but that is betting on the silicon lottery. 6000 CL30 with an EXPO profile is the configuration AMD's platform is actually happy in, which is why it is the standing recommendation.
Arrow Lake flips the answer: DDR5-6400 is the platform's native, in-spec speed, so 6400 CL32 is the natural pick there — no divider drama, no lottery. If you are on LGA1851, the 6400 kit is not even an overclock; it is the default.
Then let the live prices break the tie
Since performance is near-identical once the platform rules are respected, the premium decides. When the 6400 CL32 kit is within a few percent of the 6000 CL30 kit and you are on Intel, take the 6400. On AM5, take the 6000 CL30 at essentially any premium — paying extra for a spec your memory controller resists is spending in the wrong direction. The list below shows both classes ranked by distance from their own all-time lows, so you can see which side of the debate is actually cheap this week.
How the comparison stays honest
Kits on this page are DDR5 between 6000 and 6400MT/s from tracked brands, ranked by current price relative to each kit's own recorded all-time low. Who can ignore this debate entirely
X3D owners: the stacked cache mutes memory scaling so thoroughly that either kit performs the same — buy whichever is nearer its floor. Budget builders: a 5600 or 6000 CL36 kit at a genuinely low price beats both of these bins at a premium. And extreme overclockers were never choosing between these two kits anyway.
